Nature is amazing! It teaches us so much about a myriad of subjects, from science to art and math. Spending time outdoors, interacting with nature, is at the core of our programs. As facilitators we encourage learning for the sake of learning.
By having repeated access to nature, we are able to truly observe the changes, the ebbs and flows of the seasons.
We understand the different teachings of Charlotte Mason through her three-pronged approach to learning.
“Education is an Atmosphere, a Discipline, a Life.”
The atmosphere of learning in nature is important. How and what a child absorbs from this environment is crucial. The building of a discipline through good habits and the building of character. These are achieved through being in smaller groups, better child to facilitator ratio and the ability to have hands-on learning. We believe in supporting Charlotte Mason’s techniques of children learning living thoughts and ideas, as opposed to ‘dry facts’. We live our stories, created on the land around us and played out with friends and peers.
Leading through hands-on learning, almost everything can be art! Exercising the children’s minds through playing and building, creating and imagining, art is everywhere and nature makes it more vibrant!
Children have opportunities to whittle sticks, make shelters together as well as let their minds wander freely growing and being curious to our world.
Our programs encourage the use and development of fine motor skills through handwork projects such as art, crafts, nature play (mud, leaves, sand). This offers children the opportunity for creative expression and growth whilst playing with a variety of materials.
Being immersed in nature, seeing the changing of the seasons, weather patterns and the movements of migratory animals fosters a connection to the world around us. It provides the foundation for question asking, inquisitive-led development and interactions with nature.
We further utilize natural and man-made tools, such as ropes and sticks, to provoke children’s minds to problem solve through construction and design.
How the children play leads to the development of the child’s relationship with learning itself. A solid, healthy and diverse relationship with continued learning will serve them well far into adulthood. Small and personal groups focuses healthy interaction between peers and the facilitators.
Positive and continual growth is paramount in our programs. Building a strong and beautiful connection through learning and stewardship.
Connection is a pillar of a forest and nature school. This is created through hands on play, interaction with the land and sit spots.
We incorporate sits spots for reflection and calmness. To bring children back to nature, encourage them to ponder, to consider and reflect. To listen to the birds, the sound of the wind blowing through the tree canopy. To be present, aware and foster a deeper connection to nature.
